Obama nominates Denny Chin for the U.S. Court of Appeals
U.S. President Barack Obama this month nominated Judge Denny Chin for a seat
on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Chin currently
serves as a U.S. District Court judge for the Southern District of New York.
Obama also nominated Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson for a seat on the United States
Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
"Judges Chin and Thompson have displayed exceptional dedication to public
service throughout their careers," Obama said. "They have served on the bench
with distinction in New York and Rhode Island, and I am honored to nominate them
today to serve the American people on the United States Court of Appeals. I am
confident that they will be judicious and esteemed additions to the First and
Second Circuits."
The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and the Asian
American Justice Center issued a joint statement praising Chin’s nomination.
"Judge Chin is an active and longstanding member of NAPABA, and we are
ecstatic about his nomination," said Andrew T. Hahn, president of NAPABA. "We
thank the Obama administration for its continued commitment to increasing
diversity in the judiciary and senator Charles Schumer for his strong support of
Judge Chin and the Asian Pacific American community."
Chin was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong. At the age of two, his family moved to
the United States. He was raised in New York City and attended Princeton
University. He graduated from Princeton magna cum laude in 1975 and from Fordham
Law School, where he was the managing editor of the Fordham Law Review,
in 1978.
If confirmed, Chin will be the only currently active Asian Pacific American
federal appellate court judge in the United States out of approximately 175
federal appellate court judgeships. He would also become the first-ever Asian
Pacific American federal appellate court judge nominated and confirmed outside
the Ninth Circuit and the first Asian Pacific American federal appellate court
judge in the northeast.
