New book examines demographic trends of APA community
The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) has announced the release
of a new book, The New Face of Asian Pacific America: Numbers,
Diversity, and Change in the 21st Century, which offers comprehensive,
up-to-date analysis of demographic and cultural changes in the Asian
Pacific American (APA) community.
"OCA is very excited to be a part of this project," said
Raymond Wong, OCA National President. The organization’s 50 chapters
will be donating copies of the book to local libraries and schools across
the nation.
The New Face of Asian Pacific America was written by leading
Asian-American scholars and journalists. The co-editors of the book are
Eric Lai of AsianWeek and Dennis Arguelles of the UCLA Asian
American Studies Center.
The book draws upon data from the U.S. Census 2000 and other
quantitative surveys. It is divided into sections by ethnicity as well as
geography, and provides many tables, maps, and charts of demographic data
of APAs.
"The data provided in this book provides a roadmap for OCA to
advocate effectively to meet the needs of our communities," said
Christine Chen, OCA Executive Director. "We need this information to
educate our policy makers, funders, and many others from the private and
public sector about Asian Pacific Americans."
The book may be ordered from the resource section of OCA’s
website at <www.ocanatl.org>.
