Bagel dreams

Where on Earth Is My Bagel?

By Frances Park and Ginger Park

Illustrated by Grace Lin

Lee and Low Books, 2001

Hardcover, 30 pages, $16.00

By Josephine Bridges

How a New York bagel popped into Yum Yung’s head was a mystery." Where on Earth Is My Bagel? is the story of how the Korean boy’s eccentric wish comes true through a blend of his own determination, the help of his neighbors near and far, and a little magic. It’s delicious.

First, Yum Yung sends a pigeon to New York with an order for "one bagel to go." He waits and waits, and when no bagel appears, he instigates a search for the missing object of his dreams. He describes a bagel to Farmer Ahn, who thinks the boy may be looking for a wheel. When Yum Yung asks Fisherman Kee if he has seen the missing bagel, the fisherman wonders if he means a life ring. And Beekeeper Lee suspects that maybe it’s a swarm of bees that Yum Yung is seeking. All three apologize, explaining, "I know nothing about bagels."

The pigeon finally catches up with Yum Yung at Oh’s Heavenly Bakery, but the bird carries not a bagel but a recipe. Yum Yung and his neighbors collaborate to make the bagel a reality so scrumptious that Yum Yung can "even taste the curious hole in the middle." If you want to know how they do it, you’ll just have to read this delightful book. Munch on a bagel while you’re at it.
